Summary

A shimmering, joyful new novel about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common。

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story。 How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together。 He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra。

Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak。

Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection。 The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan。 If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?

But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?

I don't even know how to fully express my love for this book。 Each of Emily Henry's new releases is my new favorite, but this time it's true with Funny Story。 As someone who also loves to talk and tell stories, this is right up my alley。 I was already intrigued with the concept of how Daphne and Miles would meet and it was executed brilliantly。 AH, there were just so many things to love。 From the library support to the pop culture references to the wide range of tropes and details, I was hooked I don't even know how to fully express my love for this book。 Each of Emily Henry's new releases is my new favorite, but this time it's true with Funny Story。 As someone who also loves to talk and tell stories, this is right up my alley。 I was already intrigued with the concept of how Daphne and Miles would meet and it was executed brilliantly。 AH, there were just so many things to love。 From the library support to the pop culture references to the wide range of tropes and details, I was hooked from the start。 This had a little small-town romance vibe, roommates to friends to lovers, found family, and a bit of he fell first。 All the references Emily threw in here felt deliberate, and I thought they fit well into the story。 I also get Nick Miller energy from Miles and I am here for all of that。 Besides the lightness of it all—and I was laughing out loud at several points—there was also a bit of heaviness here due to a neglectful parent and not feeling worthy or good enough for love。 That being said, the emotional aspect was so well done。 I cried at several points in the book—feeling like I not only related to the fictional characters but the beautiful words Henry wrote as well。 It's easy to say this is definitely one of my favorite books of the year if not a new favorite in general。 I hope Em Hen never changes because stories like this are exactly what I love to read。 It was an incredible book that I know will be living in my head for a long time。 Thank you so much to Berkley Romance for providing me with an e-ARC to read and review! 。。。more

Synopsis:When Daphne finds herself alone in the small Michigan town, she ends up rooming with the only other one person who would understand。 Miles。 Why is he the only one who could understand? Because her ex left her, to be with his ex。 Fitting, right?Miles and Daphne are opposites。 He’s scruffy, where she’s more put together。 She’s practical, where he’s freer spirited。 They aren’t exactly meant to be friends, but when drowning their sorrows one night they form an unlikely alliance and a plan。 Synopsis:When Daphne finds herself alone in the small Michigan town, she ends up rooming with the only other one person who would understand。 Miles。 Why is he the only one who could understand? Thoughts:This was such a fun story! The story of how Daphne and Miles became an item, is not your typical couple origin story, and I was all for it。 Daphne was fun to read about, I just love reading about librarians and the work that they do。 Fake dating is a ton of fun when done right, and I think that this book got it right。 Forced proximity is one of my favorite tropes, and it was fun to see how this one played out。 I love when opposite attract couples come together in unlikely situations。 I really enjoyed Daphne and Miles as a couple, they just seemed to click naturally and I think that chemistry is hard to master, yet Emily Henry has done it again。As with typical Emily Henry writing, it is pretty flawless and flows easily。 There is plenty of top-notch banter and the tone is light and airy, while dealing with some not easy topics。 I have noticed a trend in her last few books that she is seeming to deal with some larger, more complex issues, instead of writing just easy-breezy books。 Nothing wrong with either, and I enjoy reading both styles。 With this new trend though I am excited to see what she comes up with next。 Can’t wait for the next book, is it out yet?I immensely enjoyed this one and had fun listening to it。 Thank you to @PRHAudio for an ALC copy。 All thoughts are my own。 。。。more

Emily Henry has such a knack for making me fall head over heels for her characters。 In Funny Story, you will fall in love with Miles and Daphne。 This seemingly unsuitable match will have you swooning。 The character development throughout is expertly handled and I honestly didn't want to farewell this gorgeous bunch of people。 Another 5 star read from the Queen。 Emily Henry has such a knack for making me fall head over heels for her characters。 In Funny Story, you will fall in love with Miles and Daphne。 This seemingly unsuitable match will have you swooning。 The character development throughout is expertly handled and I honestly didn't want to farewell this gorgeous bunch of people。 Another 5 star read from the Queen。 。。。more

I was GAGGED and was giggling。Anyways everyone needs to read this。Thank you Netgally for the arc!!! 。。。more

Okay!! Very sweet and cute story。 To me, compared to her other masterpieces, this one was not as gripping。 Daphne was getting on my freaking nerves a little bit!! The other two I’ve read had me sobbing screaming throwing up and this one was like, just another cartoon cover romance novel a little bit??? Don’t get me wrong it was incredibly well written it just had me wishing for a bit more。 I think it may have been that I didn’t relate as much。 So maybe it was a me problem!!! Love you EH xoxo

Thanks to penguin and Viking books for sending this proof out。 It’s no surprise that I’m a big Emily Henry fan and this book doesn’t do anything to change that。 I will eat up anything she has to offer! This is Emily Henry’s fifth novel, and I have loved every one of them。 If I had to choose, my favourites before this one are Beach Read and Book Lovers。 Daphne is heartbroken, her fiance left her for his childhood best friend。 She’s now humiliatingly living with her fiance’s childhood best friend’s very recent ex boyfriend, Miles and trying to be okay with everything。 Thankfully, Miles is a good roommate in that she never sees him as he’s always barricaded in his room。 I actually laughed out lou This is Emily Henry’s fifth novel, and I have loved every one of them。 If I had to choose, my favourites before this one are Beach Read and Book Lovers。 Daphne is heartbroken, her fiance left her for his childhood best friend。 She’s now humiliatingly living with her fiance’s childhood best friend’s very recent ex boyfriend, Miles and trying to be okay with everything。 Thankfully, Miles is a good roommate in that she never sees him as he’s always barricaded in his room。 I actually laughed out loud at one of these sections, where Miles is watching Bridget Jones’ Diary over and over, eating ice cream while wrapped in a blanket。 Emily Henry manages to speak to my soul。 Daphne and Miles are real, live people。 Anxious and excited and hoping for the best and sometimes getting it wrong, with the best of intentions。 Even Peter and Petra are depicted not as the big bad villains, but two people who realised they were in love with each other and needed to act on it。 Not exactly selfless, but the alternative was to make four people miserable forever。 One of the things Henry is great at is writing characters who you wish were your friends, and actually, you feel like they could be your friends, if they existed and were real people。 The other Henry themes are there too - complicated parental relationship, a sense of loss or longing around a childhood or teenager event, the message that home is where the heart is and not necessarily the place you spent most of your youth living in。I also loved that it was a love story about libraries, and not just about romantic relationships。 Daphne works in a library, and her enthusiasm is palpable。 It made me want to run down to my local library and check a book out, just to make sure it stays open。 Recommended for fans of Emily Henry, of course。 This is now in my top three of her books。 I think it also felt similar to Drunk on Love by Jasmine Guilory and Yours Truly by Abby Jiminez - thoughtful romances, is what I’d call it。 But not boring!Buy your copy of Funny Story from all good bookshops from April 25th 2024, and you can pre-order a beautiful signed hardback from Waterstones, here。 Thanks as always to Viking for the early DRC (what a present for Blue Monday!) and Netgalley for the platform。 。。。more

I absolutely loved Happy Place and Beach Read, so my expectations were high。 Overall, I did like this book but I couldn’t say that until about halfway through。Actually 3。5 stars rounded upThe first half felt very much like a romcom, hence the title, but it felt all too predictable。 It didn’t feel like a Henry book。 Fast forward to the second half, and I finally started to get the classic Emily Henry feeling that makes her books more than just a romance novel。 The main characters’ baggage really I absolutely loved Happy Place and Beach Read, so my expectations were high。 Overall, I did like this book but I couldn’t say that until about halfway through。Actually 3。5 stars rounded upThe first half felt very much like a romcom, hence the title, but it felt all too predictable。 It didn’t feel like a Henry book。 Fast forward to the second half, and I finally started to get the classic Emily Henry feeling that makes her books more than just a romance novel。 The main characters’ baggage really starts to unfold, and we get to the nitty gritty of the situation。 The biggest gripe I have with this story is that it’s not super believable for me。 Yes, it’s a book, but all of Emily’s other books feel like they could really happen。 Like the characters are real people, not people in some cheesy romcom。Personally, I wish more of the book was like the second half。 I feel like the average romance reader would really enjoy this, but die-hard Emily Henry readers might feel similar to me。If I were giving someone who’s never read Emily Henry before a book, this would be it because (imo) you can only go up from here!~~~~~~~~~~S P O I L E R ~ W A R N I N G~~~~~~~~~~~~~I think it was really unrealistic and overdone that these two who JUST got out of major, long term relationships, are now jumping back into one and saying “I love you” after what, 3 months? 4? That was where this book REALLY lost me。I know sometimes we just meet the right person at the right time, and she did hold off on moving in with him in the end, take things slow, and maybe I’m being too much of a realist here, but I just can’t ship a couple that would do this。 。。。more

And what would it mean if she did?I LOVED this book!! This was absolutely one of my favorite Emily Henry books。 As of now, I'm placing it just under Book Lovers and just above Happy Place。 The margins are SLIM, but they're there。 I'll give this some more thought, but I genuinely loved this book and tore through it way faster and more hungrily than I did Happy Place。 Miles and Daphne's chemistry was palpable from the start。 I really, really liked both of their characters, which doesn't always happen for me in romance。 They both had their issues, sure, but nothing got in the way in that annoying, just-looking-for-an-issue way。 As is always the case with Emily Henry, the supporting characters were top tier。 They were funny, unique and super easy to love。 I learned how to use the "highlights" feature on my Kindle for this book -- there were so many cute scenes, funny one-liners and just adorable quotes that I had to start marking them! Plus this book was legit funny!!! I laughed out loud multiple times and caught myself smiling at myself throughout the book。I really loved this one, and I think you will too。 Emily Henry can't miss!! 。。。more
